The Graduate Teacher Technology Certificate (GT²C) program is centrally administered by CIE (Center for Instructional Excellence). Specifically, the GT²C provides certification that a graduate student has acquired the technology skills needed to teach today's courses. The technology components are:
  • Web Authoring: Course Management Systems (WebCT Vista)
  • Web Page Design (Dreamweaver)
  • Converting Documents (Adobe Acrobat)
  • Computer Mediated Communication
  • Graphics: Digital Imaging (Fireworks)
  • Future Technologies: Multimedia e-learning tools (Breeze, Tegrity, Camtasia etc)
Three Specific Requirements for Certification are:
  1. Course Website using WebCT Vista or a public access website
  2. For this certificate program the graduate student will complete a functional course website that follows the specifications of a design plan. The components are listed below.
    • Homepage: Create or modify a homepage that reflects the nature and identity of the course. It must provide easy access to other areas of the course website.
    • Syllabus: Create or modify a course syllabus that the students can access from a link on the homepage and/or the course menu.
    • Course Calendar: Create or modify a course calendar including a schedule of readings, due dates, and other important events.
    • Discussion Tool: Include a threaded discussion tool on the Website. Select at least one topic and compose discussion questions for that topic.
    • Lecture Notes: Create an organizer page for lecture notes. Include at least two links to content files.
    • Readings and Resources: Create an organizer page for class readings and/or resources. This page may contain journal articles, book chapters, PowerPoint presentations, links to external sites, or interactive elements.
    • Advanced WebCT Functionality: Include one advanced WebCT feature such as a content module with at least one page of content, a quiz or survey and/or an assignment tool with at least one assignment.
    • Selective Release Page: Create an organizer page on your home page for the TAs and instructor(s) for the course that can not be viewed by students in the course.

  3. Design Plan for Course Site in WebCT Vista or a public access website
    • The graduate student must create a planning document for a Purdue course working with a sponsoring professor.

  4. Technical Skills Assessment
  5. At the end of the sessions the graduate student will successfully complete a hands-on demonstration of building a simple webpage using Dreamweaver by:
    • Formatting simple pages
    • Manipulating visuals, pictures, and/or images
    • Preparing links to other sites and/or previously developed materials
    • Publishing a webpage to WebCT Vista and/or a personal web space.

Criteria for Eligibility
  • All the candidates must be sponsored by a professor, preferably one for whom the graduate student is currently a teaching assistant. The course with which the candidate is working will be the context for the technology skills learned.
  • All the candidates must be degree- seeking graduate students who have completed or are making progress towards completing the Graduate Teacher Certificate (GTC).
  • Once accepted, candidates are committed to attend all sessions.
  • Because there will be limited space in GT²C sessions, preference may be given to doctoral students.
